The ‘Thornbury Welcomes’ team is made up of Michelle, our wonderful Project Coordinator, a growing team of volunteers, and 3 Directors (sounds impressive but really just like trustees for a charity).
Michelle Galliott – Project Coordinator
Michelle moved to Thornbury 12 years ago and is enthusiastic about community. In addition to her role with Thornbury Welcomes, she is an administrator for Thornbury Area Youth Music Trust and a few homeless charities. She is creative and a keen thespian.
She got involved with Thornbury Welcomes as she wants to see community grow and thrive. She is very passionate about youth services and helping those with additional needs.
David Fordham – Director
David Fordham – Director
David is, himself, a newcomer to Thornbury – arriving from Oxford (via the West Indies). In early 2017, he moved into one of the new houses being built around the town and has since been helping his neighbours get better connected to the town. He is also involved in the Choral Society, the U3A and the Armstrong Hall Working Group.
‘I found everyone in Thornbury – from the shop keepers on the High Street to the committees and members of the organisations I joined – very welcoming. Now I am settled in myself, I felt I should do my bit to make sure all future newcomers to the town get the warm welcome they deserve and the information they need to get involved – Thornbury Welcomes offered me a great way to do this.’
Helen Harrison – Director
Helen was serving the town as Mayor of Thornbury when she got involved in setting up Thornbury Welcomes. For her the key driver is a passion for community, and helping to find ways to bring out the best in the people of the town, for the people of the town, and in ways that serve all who are connected with the town, whether as residents, visitors, or commuters.
As well as her role with TW, Helen is a town councillor, an active member of Thornbury Baptist Church, and serves as a trustee for a couple of Thornbury-based charities. Outside of all that, you might find her outdoors or at the gym training for triathlons, and she loves to relax by ‘baking to bless’.
Ian Walker – Director
Ian has lived in and around Thornbury for over 30 years. When not applying his time to Thornbury Welcomes, Ian is part of the organising committee for the annual Thornbury Carnival (first Saturday in July!!), and is responsible for the parade through our town that starts the day.
‘The reason I joined TW particularly was to make the town, shops and businesses more understanding of those with additional needs such as Autism and Dementia – I have family members who have these challenges in their lives.’
Some of our volunteers like to focus on particular projects that we are facilitating, whilst others get involved across the board. We are always keen to hear from others who would like to join the team in some capacity. Whether you are new to the town or have been here for some time, it would be great to work with you.
